Los canadienses Simple Plan estarán de nuevo en España, 12 y 13 de marzo en Madrid y Barcelona, presentando su último trabajo “Get Your Heart On!”. Con las entradas agotadas para ambas fechas, hablamos con Sebastien Lefebvre, guitarra y coros, para conocer sus expectativas.
De vuelta en España. Las entradas estan agotadas desde hace tiempo ¿Que expectativas os da?
Es una locura! Ya sabemos lo que España puede hacer así que no esperamos menos que otras veces. Gracias por ser nuestros fans
‘Get Your Heart On!’, su ultimo álbum, fue editado hace unos meses. ¿Como ha sido la respuesta hasta el momento? ¿Esta sucediendo todo lo que esperabais?
Ha sido genial. Empezamos a girar antes de que el disco saliera y los fans ya estaban muy metidos en las canciones que ya se habian editado. En general les gustan las nuevas canciones en directo, tanto como las viejas, cantan cada palabra.
¿Como describirias este álbum en comparación con los anteriores?
Es una especie de mezcla de todo lo que hemos hecho, pero mejor. Aunque es un paso adelante, tiene todo lo que te gusta de Simple Plan. Por lo tanto, puede sentirse como un retorno a nuestras raíces, se puede sentir muy profundo a veces, o como algo muy nuevo y diferente. Pero sobre todo, yo diría que es un álbum muy divertido.
El nombre de este disco, ¿Podría ser su nuevo lema?
Supongo que sí. Puede significar ser pasional, preocuparte por las cosas, amar.
Me gustaría preguntarte sobre la promo de este disco, porque fue muy diferente a lo que haciais previamente. Vestidos de raperos, animadoras. Tuvo que ser divertido. ¿Que queriais decir con esto?
Lo pasamos muy bien. Supongo que lo dices mirando las fotos. El significado es que, no importa cuán ridículas esten bandas y artistas con el paso de los años, porque esto siempre será musica. Y así es como los fans nos han hecho sentir.
Pasemos a hablar de “This Song Saved My Life”, que obviamente fue hecha para los fans pero ¿Cual es la razón de ello, es decir, que os llevo a hacerla? Incluso estuvisteis poniendo un slideshow con fotos de los fans durante una gira en Canadá.
Es una canción acerca de cómo la música puede ser de gran alcance. Se puede convertir en tu día o tu vida. Y esa es una historia que hemos escuchado muchas veces de nuestros fans. Así que les pedimos que nos ayudasen a escribir la canción. Las letras y los comentarios que hicieron los fans de la banda. Es una historia increible, y los fans realmente se relacionan con ella, como se puede ver en el slideshow.
Por cierto, hablando de canciones, ¿Cómo llegaste a colaborar con Rivers Cuomo en ‘Can’t Keep My Hands Off You’?
Solamente le llamamos para decirle que queriamos hacer algo juntos, a ambos nos encanto la idea y la canción, así que lo siguiente era cantarla. Ahora siempre podremos decir que tenemos a Rivers en una de nuestras canciones.
Y acerca de las colaboraciones, Alex de All Time Low ha estado trabajando con vosotros. ¿Vais a colaborar vosotros con All Time Low?
Creo que ellos van a estar pronto en estudio y vamos a ir de gira pronto. Fue genial trabajar con ellos y la gira fue lo mejor. ¡Desde luego que lo pasamos de maravilla!
Es curioso el vídeo con el que iniciais los conciertos. ¿Qué significa para la banda? ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
Fue por burlarnos de nosotros mismos. Somos el tipo de banda que le gusta divertirse. Es algo que se puede decir nada más ver el vídeo. Supongo que estabamos buscando una excusa divertida para llevar de nuevo esos ridiculos trajes.
Hace algún tiempo que hicisteis un concierto con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Montreal. ¿Qué significo para vosotros?
Fue uno de los mejores momentos de nuestras carreras. Fue un espectáculo muy grande para nosotros, estábamos muy nerviosos, pero era como un momento épico, compartir el escenario con 100 músicos. Es algo que esperamos hacer de nuevo algún día. Y era más especial verlo despues en la televisión. Fue dificil de disfrutar, porque todo fue muy abrumador.
Para finalizar, nunca habeis cambiado de formación desde 1999. ¿Cuál es el secreto?
Resolver los problemas y no quedarse loco. La banda y lo que hacemos es más grande que cualquier pelea que jamas podamos tener. Una vez que sabes y lo aceptas, es más fácil de entender las cosas y trabajar a través de tus problemas.

Craziness! We know how the spanish people can get, and we expect nothing less. Thank you for being our fans.
‘Get Your Heart On!’, your last record, was released some months ago. How has the response been so far? Is everything going as you expected with this new one?
It’s been great. We started touring before the album came out and the fans were already very much into the songs that were already out. They like the new songs live just as much as the old songs, and they sing every word.
How would you describe the new record in comparison to the previous LPs?
It’s kind of a mix of everything we’ve ever done, but better. Still a step forward, but everything you like about Simple Plan. So it can feel like a return to our roots, it can feel very deep at times, or very new and different too. But over all, i would say it’s a very fun album.
The name of this new record, could it be your motto?
I guess it can. It means to be passionate, to care about things, to love.
I’d like to ask you about the promotion for the new record, because it was very different in comparison with what you have done previously. Being dressed like rappers, entertainers. It had to be fun! What did you want to say with it?
We did have fun. I guess you can tell by looking at the picture. The meaning is that, no matter how ridiculous bands and artists have look throughout the years, it’s always been about the music. And that’s how the fans have made us feel.
Let’s talk about ‘This Song Saved My Life’. It is a song made for the fans, obviously, but what’s the reason to do this, and what does it mean? Also during the tour in Canada you have been putting a slideshow with fans’ photos in this song!
It’s a song about how powerful music can be. It can turn your day or your life around. And that’s a story we’ve heard many time from our fans about our music. So we asked them to help us write the song. The lyrics and comments that the fans made about the band. It’s quite a powerful story, and the fans really relate to it, as you can se in the slide show.
Btw, talking about songs, how did you end up collaborating with Rivers Cuomo on ‘Can’t Keep My Hands Off You’?
We just called him and told him we wanted to write together. We both loved the song and he was into singing on it. Now we can forever say that we have Rivers on one of our songs.
And about collaborations, Alex of All Time Low has mentioned about working with Simple Plan on new music. Will you be working on the new All Time Low record?
I think they will be going in the studio soon and we will be on tour. But it was great working with them and it was ever better touring with them. We sure had a blast on this past canadian tour.
The video with which you start the shows captured my attention. What does it mean for the band? How was the idea born?
It was just ourselves making fun of ourselves. We are the kind of band that likes to have fun. I think you can tell by looking at that video. I guess we were just looking for a funny excuse to wear those ridiculous outfits again.
Some time ago you did a show with the Montreal Symphonic Orchestra. What did it mean to you?
It was one of the highlights of our careers. It was a huge show for us, we were very nervous but it was such an epic moment to share the stage with 100 other musicians. It is something we hope to do again someday. Seeing it again after the fact on TV was even more special. It was hard to enjoy on the spot because the whole thing was very overwhelming.
Finally, you have never changed your lineup, since 1999. What is the secret?
Solve your problems and don’t stay mad. The band and what we do is bigger than any fight we could ever have. Once you know and accept that, it’s easier to figure out things and work through your problems.
