Reptile Youth son la última sensación en Europa. En tan solo un año han conseguido hacer uno de los álbumes más interesantes del pop electronico del momento. Canciones para bailar y disfrutar en un festival como el madrileño Dcode, donde estaran el próximo 14 de Septiembre. Hablamos con Mads Damsgaard, uno de los chicos del dúo danes.
¿Cual fue vuestro primer pensamiento cuando supisteis que ibais a tocar en España por primera vez?
Nos sentimos muy emocionados. Me encanta tocar en sitios en los que no he estado antes. Las primeras veces siempre son especiales.
En lo que respecta a Madrid, tocareis en Dcode Festival. ¿Qué es lo que más os gusta del festival y su cartel?
MØ. Ella tiene una energia increible sobre el escenario, y es muy interesante ver como las cosas le estan pasando tan rapido. Esta a punto de hacerse grande.
Para todos aqeullos que se pregunten como es un directo de Reptile Youth. ¿Cómo lo describirias?
Es una guerra o una celebración, a veces ambas.
Cambiando de tema ¿Como os conocisteis?
La primera vez que vi a Esben él estaba tocando en solitario en un edificio okupa. Estaba tocando electronica y fue una experiencia muy profunda, fue como ver una obra de arte rara. Era muy interesante y diferente a la musica que yo estaba haciendo en ese momento. Al tiempo nos encontramos otra vez y le pregunte si queria hacer algunas canciones juntos. Unas semanas despues ya teniamos la primera, “Speeddance”.
De ese encuentro, siempre habeis resaltado vuestro viaje a China. ¿Cómo de importante fue para vuestro primer álbum?
Creo que todo lo que experimentas siempre tiene influencia en lo que haces. China como tal no tiene ninguna influencia directa en las canciones, pero creo que si que tiene algo de influencia en nosotros por ser el contexto en el que las canciones se desarrollaron por primera vez en directo.
Llegados a este punto, ¿En que consiste vuestro proceso de composición?
A veces hacemos la letra y la melodia, y otras solo tocamos a ver que sale con un bajo, un sintetizador, un ordenador, una guitarra. Tratamos de no hacer lo mismo una y otra vez.
Nunca habiais grabado un álbum antes. ¿Cómo fue el proceso?
Invertimos un año en componer todas las canciones, desarrollandolas en directo y después grabandolas en Londres con Dave y Mark. Fue un proceso muy intuitivo y ameno, pero tambien muy tecnico y emocional. No es muy divertido estar en un estudio de grabación. Es como un paseo de emocionesen el que no tienes el control. Un proceso en el que tratas de dejar ir las cosas en una constante lucha por mantener las dudas lejos de tus pensameintos.
Como ya has comentado, el álbum fue producido por Dave M. Allen y Mark Ralph, productores de bandas como The Cure, Hot Chip y Lady Gaga entre otros. ¿Qué habeis aprendido de ellos?
Tuvimos un proceso muy interesante en el que nos dieron mucho, y en el que nosotros les debemos la mitad de nuestros corazones. Ambos pusieron mucho esfuerzo y pasión en la grabación de este álbum. Creo que hemos aprendido a ser más abiertos hacia nuevos estilos, además de que perder el control es más interesante que tratar de mantenerlo todo.
Un año despues del lanzamiento de este álbum. ¿Cómo han evolucionado las canciones de Reptile Youth?
Hemos empezado a escribir nuevas canciones, y ya tenemos como una treintena. Actualmente estamos en el estudio de grabación, va a ser un segundo trabajo muy diferente al primero. Es dificil que podamos decir algo más.
Por último, conozco algunas bandas de Dinamarca, solia escuchar a Mew, The Raveonettes, y creo que debería saber más, ¿Podeis hacernos alguna recomendación?
Hay muchas cosas en el panorama danes en este momento, en muchas direcciones y estilos. Bandas como Iceage, CTM, Pinkunoizu, Broke y MØ.
This is the classic question for bands that are coming for the first time, what was your first thought when you knew that you’re coming to Spain?
Just really excited. I love playing places I never played before. First times are very special.
You will play at Dcode Festival in Madrid. What do you like most of Dcode’s lineup?
MØ. She has an amazing energy on stage and it’s really interesting to see how fast things are moving with her at the moment. She is just about to blow up.
For those who are wondering about what to expect from Reptile Youth live. How would you describe it?
It’s a war or a celebration. Sometimes both.
Moving on, how did you guys come together?
The first time I saw Esben he was playing a solo show in a squatted building. He was playing electronica and the whole experience was like watching a piece weird performance art. It was very intriguing and very different from the music I did at that time. A few weeks after we bumped into each other again and I asked if we should do a track together. A few weeks after we did and the first track we ever recorded was Speeddance.
One of the first things you did was traveling to China together. How important was that fact in writing your debut album?
I believe that everything you experience has an influence on the things you create. China did not have a direct influence on the songs though but I believe that it still had had some kind of influence by being the context where the songs first developed live.
What does your writing process involve?
Sometimes lyrics and a melody. Sometimes just playing and see what comes up. Sometimes sitting in a basement with a bass, a guitar, a computer and different synthesizers. We try not to do the same thing over and over again.
You’d never recorded an album before so, how was the process and how did you enjoy recording it?
We spend a year on writing songs, developing them live and than recorded it in London with Dave and Mark. It was a very intuitive and playful process but also a very touch and emotional one. It’s not fun being in the studio recording. It’s mostly a roller coster ride of emotions that you have no control over. It’s aprocess of trying to let go and a constant battle of keeping your doubt away from your thoughts.
Your debut album was produced by Dave M. Allen and Mark Ralph, producers of many bands like The Cure, Hot Chip and Lady Gaga among others. How was the experience? What have you learned after working with them?
We had an interesting and giving process and owe Mark and Dave half our hearts. They both put so much work and passion into creating this album with us and I think we learned to be more open towards the material and ourselves. – and learned that losing control is more interesting than trying to keep it in whatever you do.
This debut album has more than a year, how has evolved new Reptile Youth songs all this time?
We started writing new material just after the first album was done and have been writing around thirty new songs. Right now we are in the studio recording and it’s going to be a very different album from the first one. More than this is hard to say right now.
Finally, I know a little bit about music in Denmark, I used to listen Mew and The Raveonettes, but I think I should know more, so what’s the music scene there? Any recommendations?
There’s a lot happening on the danish music scene right now – and in many different directions but all really interesting. Bands like Iceage, CTM, Pinkunoizu, Broke and MØ.
