Heartless Breakers son el nuevo proyecto de antiguos miembros de Daytrader y Matt Mascarenas. Su música se mueve por un rock alternativo directo y pegadizo. Hablamos con el vocalista Chase Griffis durante la primera gira de la banda.
En primer lugar, puesto que en España sois una banda nueva y os conoce poca gente, me gustaría saber cómo empezasteis con el proyecto de Heartless Breakers.
Matt, Bryan y yo habiamos estado juntos en algunos proyectos durante años. Cuando la banda de Matt se disolvió en Octubre de 2012, él volvió a Salt Lake e inmediatamente empezamos a componer los tres.
¿Cuales son vuestras principales influencias? ¿Si pudieras describir tu música como la combinación de otras dos, cuales eligiriais?
Todos tenemos una idea bastante diferente de la música, por lo que es difícil determinar nuestras influencias. Sin embargo, me encanta cómo ha salido todo cuando combinamos nuestros gustos.
¿Cuáles son vuestros principales objetivos? ¿Qué es lo que queriais lograr cuando formasteis la banda?
Sólo queremos componer, componer y volver a componer más canciones. Personalmente sólo quiero progresar como músico y compositor. Quiero que la gente sea capaz de relacionarse con las historias de nuestras canciones.
Estais en vuestra primera gira ahora mismo, ¿Cómo han ido los primeros conciertos?
Los conciertos fueron geniales, especialmente para ser nuestra primera gira juntos. Matt, Jesse (Nuestro tour manager), y yo, estabamos muy borrachos la primera noche en Boise. Así llegamos a estar hasta las cuatro de la mañana colgados en una tina de agua caliente (risas).
¿Cómo te sientes en estos días antes y después del lanzamiento del nuevo EP acústico de la banda? ¿Algún tema favorito del EP?
Me gusta el carácter que estas canciones tienen en un entorno acústico. Me gustan las pistas más cortas, las nuevas, porque en realidad son introducciones o teasers de las nuevas sobre las que estamos trabajando.
¿Cómo surgió la idea de grabar “Prescriptions” en acústico y cómo os decidisteis por ello?
Siempre he querido grabar un disco en acústico. Pasamos mucho tiempo haciendo y tocando temas en acústico, así que queríamos captar ese ambiente y hacer algo diferente.
Escuchando “Prescriptions”, me da la impresión de que siempre teníais claro como debería sonar este EP, porque es muy enérgico y maduro para ser el primero. ¿Teníais todo planeado durante el proceso creativo?
Fue mejor de lo previsto, la verdad. Como he dicho antes, hemos estado tocando música juntos durante mucho tiempo. Matt y yo hemos estado en bandas desde que teníamos 15 años. Eso y que al añadir a Bryan hemos dado con la tecla para que todo encajase. Bryan se ha convertido en un gran ingeniero y productor en el último par de años. Creo que nuestra pre -producción fue bastante sólida, incluso antes de que decidiéramos montar el estudio.
Actualmente tenéis dos EPs en bandcamp en el formato “paga lo que quieras”, agotando todas las descargas posibles que la plataforma permite . ¿Cómo te sientes acerca de ello, esperabas esa reacción?

Debido al gran éxito que la banda ha tenido en algunas webs como AltPress y Property Of Zack ¿Tenéis ganas de probar a tocar en el Reino Unido o queréis haceros antes un lugar en Estados Unidos?

Interview with Chase Griffis. Singer of Heartless Breakers.
First, as you are a new band in Spain, I want to know how Heartless Breakers started.
Matt, Bryan and I have been in numerous projects together over the years. When Matt’s old band disbanded in October of 2012, Matt moved back to Salt Lake and we immediately started writing together with Bryan.
What are your main influences? If you could describe your music as a combination of two different bands, what bands would you choose?
We all have a pretty different taste in music, so it’s hard to pinpoint any influences. However, I do love how everything has turned out when we collaborate with our different tastes.
What are your main goals? What did you want to achieve when you started the band?
We just want to write, then write and write more. Personally want I want to achieve is progressing as a musician and songwriter. I want people to be able to relate to the stories we have worked hard on telling.
You’re on tour now. How did the first shows go?
The shows are great, especially for our first tour! Matt, Jesse (our tour manager) and I got really drunk the first night in Boise, and then hung out in a hot tub at 4 in the morning.
How do you feel these days before and after the release of your new acoustic EP? Do you have a favourite track on the EP?
I enjoy the character these songs have in an acoustic setting. I like the shorter tracks (new songs) we recorded, because they are actually introductions / ”teasers” to new songs that are going to be on our next release we are working on.
How does the idea of recording the songs of “Prescriptions” in acoustic and why did you take the decision?
I’ve always wanted to record an acoustic record. We spend a lot of time in an apartment just jamming acoustics and singing/writing songs, so we really wanted to capture that vibe while
Listening to “Prescriptions”, I think you always knew how the first EP should be, because it’s very energetic and mature, but did everything go as planned during the creative process?
It went better than planned, honestly. Like I stated before, we have been playing music together for a long time. Matt and I have been in bands since we were 15, and adding Bryan to that just made everything click even better. Bryan has become a great engineer/producer over the past couple of years. I feel like our pre-production was pretty solid even before we hopped in the studio.
You guys have two EP’s in “pay what you want” in bandcamp, and you have completed all available downloads. How do you feel about that, did you expect that reaction?
