PVRIS fueron sin duda uno de los grupos revelación del 2014. Este joven grupo de Massachusetts de 21 años y con sólo un disco en el mercado ya está girando por todo el mundo tras recibir todo tipo de halagos por los críticos. Tuvimos la suerte de ver su increíble directo en París, y de paso charlar un poco.
The Backstage: ¿Como está yendo el tour? ¿Habéis aprendido algo nuevo sobre Reino Unido y Europa?
Lynn Gunn: Creo que hemos aprendido bastante sobre geografía (risas).
Alex Babinski: Si, no sabía donde estaba ningún país y ahora sé. Más o menos. Aun no del todo.
Lynn: Pero más o menos.
Había mucha expectación sobre White Noise sobretodo de gente que ya conocía el grupo, ¿estáis contentos con cómo han ido las cosas tras la publicación del disco?
Alex: Más que contentos.
Lynn: No sabíamos muy bien que esperar, pero la respuesta excedió todas las expectativas.
Sois una banda bastante nueva y todo os está sucediendo bastante rápido: ¿estabais preparados para tantas giras y promo en tan poco tiempo?
Lynn: Tenemos que estar preparados. Sabíamos las consecuencias cuando empezamos en esto.
¿Cómo lleváis pasar tanto tiempo fuera de casa?
Alex: (señalando a Lynn y Brian) Estos chicos me mantienen cuerdo.
Lynn: Cuando estas lejos de tu familia y tus amigos, ellos son mis amigos y familia en la carretera, nos mantenemos unidos e intentamos ser positivos, nos reímos y nos echamos la bronca uno a otro.
Alex: Tenemos que ser un equipo.
Este verano estaréis en Warped Tour que es un tour muy largo y muy importante en América. ¿Qué expectaciones tenéis?
Alex: Calor…
Brian: El mejor verano de mi vida. Con carpas y mucha deshidratación.
Lynn: Yo estoy emocionada por ponerme morena y hacer ejercicio (risas).
Brian: Yo ya estoy moreno y hago ejercicio, así que será un verano normal
También de ducharos con una manguera…
Lynn: El año pasado hicimos dos semanas de Warped Tour y me duché una vez y fue una ducha a base de botellas de agua. Y hacía frío, en Montreal, y mucho viento.
Alex: Creo que era Cuatro de Julio, hasta tenías fuegos artificiales.
Me gusta mucho el uso que le dais al blanco y negro, es hasta extraño ver una foto vuestra en color. ¿Es algo que teníais planeado para White Noise o lo seguiréis usando en el futuro?
Lynn: No lo se. Definitivamente queríamos usarlo con White Noise porque ayuda a unir todo el concepto pero ahora siento que es algo que la gente espera que sigamos utilizando, así que puede que lo hagamos.
También nos gusta el blanco y negro porque deja más a la interpretación, cuando veo algo en blanco y negro no sé muy bien que siento y puedo completar el concepto, y es algo que me gusta que también hagan con nuestras fotos. Así que puede que nos quedemos con ello. Quien sabe.
También habéis confesado ser fans de películas de terror y se puede entrever en varias canciones del álbum. ¿Qué es lo que tiene el terror que os inspira tanto?
Lynn: No lo sé.
Alex: Simplemente es fascinante
Lynn: Es catártico en alguna manera, no sé por que. Porque ninguno de nosotros somos gente rara o enfadada, pero nos fascina y nos atrapa.
He leído que ya estáis trabajando en nuevas canciones, ¿nos podéis adelantar algo?
Lynn: Creemos que son mejores que White Noise, las superan.
Brian: Igual. Las canciones nuevas son muy buenas.
Alex: Harán que tu cabeza piense un poco.
Lynn: Sí, hay muchas historias muy buenas.
¿Tenéis alguna aspiración o meta como músico?
Lynn: Hoy fue una de ellas, tocar en París.
Alex: Siempre hemos pensado: nuestro grupo es PVRIS [n.d.a: pronunciado Paris], y tocaremos en París algún día.
Lynn: ¿Conoces la aplicación Timehop? Justo hoy hace tres años lanzamos nuestro primer video, nuestra pagina web y el grupo en general. Y hoy tocamos en París.
Hay muchos comentarios online últimamente sobre chicas en la industria musical. Hay muchas mujeres en grupos y muchas trabajando en la industria en general, pero parece que el mundo musical sigue enfocado en los hombres. ¿Crees que es importante que las mujeres se hagan oír? ¿Qué se debería hacer para reclamar nuestro puesto en la música?
Lynn: Creo que las chicas simplemente necesitan ver más chicas ahí fuera, porque es como yo empecé a tocar y es como mis amigas que están en otros grupos empezaron en este mundo. Cuando ves a una mujer ahí, ya sea en el mundo de los negocios o en un escenario, piensas “oh, yo también podría hacer eso” y vas a por ello. Así que pienso cuantas más y más chicas vean a otras chicas en la industria, más chicas habrá e incluso dejará de ser un tema que comentar.

How is the tour going so far? Have your learnt something new in the UK and this European tour?
Lynn: I think we learnt a lot about geography.
Alex: Yeah, I didn’t know where anything was and now I kinda do. Still not really.
Lynn: but kinda.
There was a lot of expectation about White Noise for people who new the band because of the EP, are you happy with how things turned up after the release?
Alex: More than happy with it.
Lynn: We didn’t know what to expect, but it exceeded all of our expectations.
You are a pretty new band, and things are happening really fast: were you prepared for so much touring and promo?
Lynn: We have to be. We kind of signed up for it.
How do you deal with being away from home for so long while you’re touring?
Alex: (pointing to Lynn and Brian) These guys right here. They keep me sane.
Lynn: When you’re far away from your family and your friends, they are my friends and family on the road and we stick together and stay positive and laugh and call each other out.
Alex: You have to be a team.
You’re doing Warped Tour this year which is a pretty long tour and a big deal within American scene. What do you expect from it?
Alex: Hot…
Brian: Best summer of my life. Farmer’s tents and being dehydrated
Lynn: I’m excited to get tanned and work out.
Brian: I’m already tanned and I work out so it’s gonna be a normal summer.
And showering with a hose…
Lynn: We did two weeks [of Warped Tour] last summer and I showered once. And it was a water bottle shower. And it was cold, in Montreal, it was windy.
Alex: I think it was the 4th of July and you had fireworks.
I really like the use you give to black and white, it’s almost feels strange to see a photo of the band in color. Is this something you planned to do with White Noise or are you going to keep using it in the future?
Lynn: I don’t know. We definitely wanted to do it for White Noise because it kind of ties the whole concept and the visuals together but now I feel that it is something that people are expecting from us, so we might stick with it. We also like the black and white thing because it leaves pictures a little bit open ended, ‘cause when I see black and white pictures I kind of don’t know what I feel about them and I make up my mind on it, and I want people to do that with our pictures too. So might keep it. Who knows.
You’ve also confessed to be horror movie fans, and it’s clear that it also present in some songs of the album. What is about horror that inspire you so much?
Lynn: I don’t know.
Alex: It’s just fascinating
Lynn: It’s like cathartic in a way, I don’t know why. Because none of us are creepy people or angry people. We all are fascinated and drown to it.
I’ve read that you already have started working on new songs. Can you tell us something about these songs?
Lynn: We think they’re better than White Noise, they top it.
Brian: Same thing. All the new songs are really good.
Alex: They will get you mind thinking.
Lynn: Yes, there are a lot of cool stories.
Do you have any aspiration or milestone as a musician you would like to get in your career?
Lynn: Today was one of them, playing in Paris.
Alex: We always thought: our band is PVRIS, we’re going to go to Paris someday.
Lynn: Do you know the app timehop? Alex was just looking at this and we released our first video three years ago today, and we launched our page and our band.
There is a lot of talking online lately about girls in the rock scene. There is a lot of women in bands, and a lot of women working in music in general, but it seems that the music world still has its focus on men. Do you think it’s important to girls to make themselves heard? What do you think it has to be done to claim your place in music?
Lynn: I think girls just need to see more girls out there, because that’s how I got into this, that’s how I know all my other girlfriends who play music got into it, and when you see a female up there, whether it’s business related or on stage you think “oh I should do that too” and you go for it. So I think the more and more girls see other girls doing it, the more girls there will be in music and won’t even be a theme we will talk about.
