Zebrahead se han ganado con todo merecimiento un puesto dentro de las bandas más influenciables del punk, hasta el punto de que todas las personas que conocen en gran parte el género han oído hablar alguna vez de ellos. Su éxito radica en dicha base con reminiscencias de pop pegadizo y rock duro. Hablamos con Ali Tabatabaee antes de que vengan a España el próximo mes de Diciembre (13, 14 y 15 en Madrid, Barcelona y Pamplona).
De vuelta en España el próximo mes de Diciembre. ¿Cómo te sientes acerca de tocar aquí de nuevo? ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de España?
Estamos felices de volver a España. Los conciertos son siempre una locura y los fans son muy grandes. Lo mejor de España, además de los fans es, sin duda la comida y el clima.
Tenéis nueve álbumes donde elegir. ¿Cómo hacéis el repertorio todas las noches?
Realmente es muy simple. Nos encerramos totalmente borrachos en un sitio. Luego discutimos y el último que queda en pie es el que elige los temas.
Vamos a empezar a hablar sobre el nuevo álbum. Habéis estado trabajando en él durante mucho tiempo. Háblanos de su proceso de composición y grabación.
El proceso de composición y grabación de este álbum fue un poco diferente que cualquier otro disco, principalmente porque lo hicimos todo en nuestro propio estudio, incluso la mezcla. El ambiente era más relajado. Invertimos mucho tiempo en asegurarnos de que estábamos totalmente satisfechos con todas las canciones.
A pesar de hacerlo en vuestro propio estudio, teníais un buen equipo detrás. Hablemos acerca de trabajar con Jason Freese. ¿Por qué lo elegís de nuevo? ¿Cómo de importante es su aportación a la hora de intentar experimentar un poco?
Jason ha sido un buen amigo desde hace años, además de que acaba de hacer la portada de Panty Raid. Estaba en casa después de una gira con Green Day y nuestras agendas encajaban perfectamente. Fue genial trabajar con él porque tiene un gran sentido de la melodía y es un músico muy talentoso. Era como salir con tus mejores amigos a escribir y tocar canciones.
¿Afecta el hecho de haber escrito un álbum de versiones como “Panty Raid” a la hora de escribir “Get Nice!”?
No mucho, en Panty Raid lo único que hicimos es coger las canciones de otra gente y adaptarlas a nuestro estilo. Con Get Nice! hemos tenido mucha más libertad para experimentar con ideas originales.
Se dice que “Get Nice!” tiene un sonido parecido a sus primeros discos ¿Fueron estos las inspiraciones para este nuevo álbum o estabais escuchando algo en particular mientras componíais?
Creo que queríamos asegurarnos de que este álbum tenía más de una sensación positiva. Tratamos de hacer un álbum más sólido que el último par.
Así que, en su opinión ¿Cuáles son las diferencias y similitudes que podemos encontrar en “Get Nice!” en comparación con sus anteriores trabajos?
Las similitudes son guitarras fuertes, bajo, una batería juguetona y las diferencias incluyen escribir y grabar el álbum completamente desnudo.
“Ricky Bobby” fue el primer single, ¿Por qué elegisteis esta canción?
Queríamos comenzar con una fuerte canción rockera que diera un puñetazo en la cara. A todos nos gustó mucho Ricky Bobby y pensé que era la mejor opción.
Debo decir que la primera vez que os vi fue hace unos meses y fue bastante divertido. Sentasteis al público, disparasteis con pistolas de agua. ¿Qué importancia tienen estas cosas en un concierto de Zebrahead?
Creemos que el público es una parte importante de nuestro concierto. Nos alimentamos de la energía de nuestros fans y tenemos la suerte de tener algunos de los mejores del mundo. Siempre nos divertimos tocando en vivo y queremos que la gente pase un buen rato. Es por eso que nos aseguramos de que nuestros conciertos nunca sean aburridos.
En tu opinión ¿Cuáles son las diferencias de tocar en Europa y en América? ¿Qué se siente en ambos?
No hay una gran diferencia entre tocar en Europa o América. Los fans vienen a pasar un buen rato y a bailar. Creemos que tocar en directo es lo mejor de estar en una banda y trataremos de disfrutar de eso tanto como podamos mientras estemos en el escenario. No importa dónde.
Ya ha sido un año enorme para vosotros ¿Qué tiene que venir el próximo año?
Vamos a estar de gira para presentar el nuevo álbum. Además, tenemos la intención de comer un montón de tacos y beber muchos litros de cerveza.

Back in spain the next December. How do you feel about playing here again? What is it that you like best about spain?
We are stoked to come back to Spain. The shows are always crazy and the fans are great. The best thing about Spain besides the fans is definitely the food and the weather.
You’ve got nine albums to choose from. How do you guys put together your setlist every night?
Its really quite simple. We all lock ourselves in a dressing room and get really drunk. Then we fight it out. The last man standing chooses the set list.
Let’s start off talking about the new album. You’ve been working on it for quite a while. Tell us about your writing and recording process.
The process of writing and recording this album was a little different than any other album mainly because we did everything besides mix the album in our own studio. The atmosphere was more relaxed. We spent a lot of time making sure we were totally happy with all the songs.
Although you did it in your own studio, you had quite a team behind it. Let’s talk about working with jason freese. Why did you choose him again? How important is his input when it comes to trying some experimenting?
Jason has been a close friend for years and we had just done our panty raid covers album with him. He was home from touring with green day and our scheduled matched up perfectly. It was great working with him because he has a great sense for melody and is a very talented musician. It was like hanging out with your best friends writing and playing songs.
Does it affect the fact of having written a cover album as “Panty Raid” in the writing of “Get Nice!?”
Not too much. On Panty Raid we just made other peoples songs fit our style of music. With Get Nice! we had a lot more freedom to experiment with original ideas .
It’s said that “Get Nice!” has a similar wave to your first albums. Are they the inspirations for this new album or was there anything in particular you were listening when writing?
I think we wanted to make sure that this album had more of a positive feel. We tried to make a more uplifting album than the last couple.
So, in your opinion, what are the differences and similarities that we can find in “get nice!” In comparison to your previous lps?
Well, the similarities include loud guitars, bass, bitchin’ drums and the differences include writing and recording the album completely naked.
“Ricky bobby” was the first single, why did you choosen this song?
We wanted to start with a strong rockin’ song that would punch you in the face. We all really liked Ricky Bobby and thought it was the best choice.
I must say you guys that the first time i saw zebrahead was few months ago at the relentless garage in london and it was pretty fun. You sat down the audience, you shot us with squirt guns. How important are these things in a zebrahead show?
We think the crowed is a huge part of our show. We feed off the energy of our fans and we are fortunate to have some of the best fans in the world. We always have fun playing live and we want the audience to have a great time as well. That’s why we make sure that our shows are never boring.
What are the differences about playing in europe and US? What are you feeling in both?
There is not such a huge difference between playing in different countries. The fans come to have a great time and rock out. We think playing live is the best part about being in a band and try and enjoy it as much as we can while we are on stage. It doesn’t matter where we are.
It’s already been a massive year for you guys. What is in store for you guys for the next year?
We are going to be touring for the next year all over to support the new album. Also, we plan on eating lots of tacos and drinking gallons of beer.
