Con una propuesta tan imaginativa y fresca, Living With Lions han conseguido hacerse un nombre como una de las bandas noveles más prometedoras. Su confirmación fue en el pasado Eastpak Antidote Tour, donde abriendo para bandas como A Day To Remember o August Burns Red consiguieron llevarse unos cuantos fans a base de una buena mezcla del pop punk actual con el clásico hardcore de siempre. Hablamos con Bill, bajista de la formación canadiense.
En primer lugar me gustaría que presentaras a la banda y hablaras sobre su historia hasta ahora.
Somos Living With Lions de Vancouver, BC Canadá. La banda se formó en 2007. Landon, Loren, y Shayne, nuestro anterior bajista, se trasladaron aquí desde Medicine Hat en Alberta para formar una banda. Se reunieron con Chase y Matt en un bar una noche, donde decidieron instalarse en una casa juntos y empezar a improvisar. Shayne decidió volver a la escuela, por lo que Bill, que vivía en el sofá, tomó su lugar. Matt dejó la banda para seguir su trabajo de carpintería y modelaje en 2010, tras lo que pedimos a Stu unirse a la banda.
Sinceramente me gusta el nombre de la banda desde la primera vez que lo escuché ¿Hay algún significado detrás de él?
En realidad no, sonaba bien. Mushroom Head ya estaba cogido así que nos decidimos por Living With Lions.
Recientemente habéis tenido un cambio de vocalista, ¿Cómo describirías la transición de tener Stu en la voz en lugar de Matt?
Bueno, Stu es un poco más alto que Matt, y creo que también come más pizza, así que tuve que acostumbrarme a otra persona corriendo por el escenario. Ambos tienen unas voces muy similares, algo que hizo que la transición fuera mucho más suave, tanto para nosotros como para los fans. Además, todo esto sucedió en el lapso de un par de meses, así que Stu sólo cogió el toro por los cuernos. Eso fue todo.
“Holy Shit” es vuestro último LP, se dice que tiene un sonido mas oscuro que anteriores trabajos. ¿Es algo que buscabais o salio mientras componíais? ¿Qué crees que diferencia a este nuevo álbum de los anteriores?
Creo que el contenido del disco salió de forma natural y fuimos influenciados por lo que estaba pasando en ese tiempo.
Como una de las muchas bandas con energía que sale de Canadá, ¿Cómo planean dejar su marca en Europa y America?
¡Girar tanto como sea posible! Nos encanta viajar, tocar, ir a conciertos y estar con la gente que conocemos. Queremos que nuestros aficionados compartan eso con nosotros, y creo que es una parte importante de la experiencia de Living With Lions.
En Eastpak Antidote Tour, habéis ido de gira como teloneros de A Day To Remember, quienes agotaron entradas en toda su anterior gira en Europa. ¿Cómo te sentiste acerca de esta gira?
La gira fue increíble. Todas las bandas y ayudantes son algunas de las mejores personas que he conocido. Los conciertos fueron una locura, y nos pusimos a tocar delante de un montón de gente que no había oído hablar de nosotros o tenido la oportunidad de vernos antes.
Hablando de directos ¿Cuál es tu canción favorita para tocar en directo y por qué?
Regret Song es sin duda mi canción favorita para tocar, creo que la mayoría de mis compañeros están de acuerdo. Incluso antes de que la canción estuviese grabada sabía que iba a ser mi favorita. Es realmente melódica, una canción para corear.
Por cierto ¿Cómo va la gira hasta ahora? ¿Es el publico receptivo tanto al nuevo material como a Stu?
Nosotros preferimos tocar en su mayoría cosas nuevas cuando venimos a Europa porque la gente solo esta familiarizada con Holy Shit, pero nos gusta tocar un par de canciones antiguas para los que nos han escuchado antes. De cualquier manera, el público ha sido genial.
Pasemos a otra cosa, ¿Cómo se os ocurrió con el concepto del vídeo de “Honesty, Honestly”?
La idea se le ocurrió a nuestro buen amigo Cody Fennel . Él también dirigió el video de “Latter is Better”, diseños de todo nuestro álbum, y la mayor parte de nuestro merchandising. Él tuvo la idea de estos locos vídeos viejos que datan de los años 80. Lo puedes ver en youtube. (risas)
Hablando anteriormente de la gira, ¿Que es lo más divertido y más interesante que alguna vez te ha pasado mientras estabas en ella?
Es muy difícil decantarme por una cosa. Todos los días hay algo divertido, aunque no quiero decir ninguna de las que estoy pensando porque no estoy seguro de si son legales. (risas). Pero se me viene a la mente el ver a un pavo salvaje pasar por el parabrisas de la furgoneta de las otras bandas la pasada primavera. No sé si eso es legal o no, pero si no es, por favor arresten a The Wonder Years.
Por último, ¿Te han gustado los conciertos en España?
España es personalmente mi lugar favorito para jugar en Europa. Los conciertos fueron más de lo que podríamos pedir, la gente aquí esta loca! Y bueno, algunos de los baños son extraños, pero puedo lidiar con eso.

First I would like you introduce the band and talk about us what happened so far.
We are Living with lions from Vancouver BC canada. The band came together in 2007. Landon, Loren, and Shayne (our formal bass player) moved here from Medicine Hat Alberta to start a band. They met Chase and Matt at a bar one night. The dudes decided to move into a house together and start jamming. Shayne decided to go back to school, so Bill (who lived on the couch) took his place. Matt quit the band to pursue carpentry and male modeling in summer of 2010, so we asked Stu to join the band. He said yes.
Honestly I like your band name since the first time I listen. Is there any meaning behind it for the band?
No, not really, it sounded cool. Mushroom Head was taken, so we settled on LWL.
You guys had had a change of vocalist, how would you describe the transition of having Stu on vocals instead of Matt?
Well, Stu is a bit taller then matt, and i think he eats a bit more pizza. So we had to get used to someone else running around on stage. They have pretty similar voices, so that made the transition a lot smoother for us, and the fans of the band. The whole thing happened in the span of a couple months. So we just grabbed the bull by the horns and that was that.
Holy Shit is your last LP, it said that it has a darker wave than the previous LPs. Is that something you were looking for or on the other hand is it something that happened naturally while you guys writting? What do you think differentiates this new album of the previous?
The lyrics were a mix of Chase, Stu, and Matt’s ideas. I think the content of the record came out naturally, and were influenced by what was going on in their life’s at that time.
As one of the many high-energy bands coming out of Canada, how do you guys plan on making your mark in Europe and US?
Tour as much as possible! We love traveling, playing shows and hanging out with the people we meet. We want the fans to share that with us, and i think its an important part of the LWL experience.
In Eastpak Antidote Tour, you guys were on tour as a support band for A Day To Remember which did sold out in all of their previous tour in Europe. How did you feel about this tour?
The tour was amazing! All the bands and crew were some of the best people we have ever met! The shows were insane, and we got to play to a lot of people that may have not heard of us, or gotten the chance to see us play before.
Btw, what is your favorite song to play live and why?
Regret song is definitely my favorite song to play, i think most of the dudes agree. Even before that song was finished and recorded,i knew it was going to be my favorite. Its really melodic, and makes for a great sing along.
How is the tour going so far? Is the audience receptive to both the new material and you guys in general?
We prefer to play mostly new stuff when we come over here, a lot of people are only familiar with the stuff of Holy shit, but we like to throw in a couple of older songs for the older fans as well. Either way, the audience has been great.
How did you come up with the concept of decide to do a dating video for “Honesty, Honestly”?
Our good friend Cody Fennel came up with the concept. He also directed the video for “Later is Better”, designs all of our album work, and most of our merch. He got the idea from these crazy old dating service videos from the 80s. You can look them up on youtube.
Talking about the tour, what is the funniest and most interesting thing that’s ever happened to you while on tour?
I ts really hard to pin down one thing that is happened. Everyday something funny and crazy happens! Most of the things i can think of i dont want to talk about because im not sure if they are legal. But one that comes to mind is seeing a wild turkey go through the windshield of another bands van last spring, i dont know if thats legal or not, but if its not, please arrest The Wonder Years.
Finally, Did you like the spanish shows?
Spain is personally my favorite place to play in europe. The shows on the ADTR tour were more then we could ever ask for, the kids here are nuts! Some of the toilets are weird, but i can deal with that.
