New Found Glory estarán en España dentro de una semana, así que hablamos con ellos sobre el nuevo disco, “Resurrection”. Primero encontrareis la traducción a español y luego la versión en inglés.
Lo primero, enhorabuena por el nuevo disco, suena muy fresco, especialmente teniendo en cuenta el año que habéis pasado. Vamos a hablar de ello, porque en realidad nunca os fuisteis, entonces, ¿por qué el nombre de “Resurrection”? Es el primer disco de la banda como cuarteto, sois una banda diferente, pero no del todo…
Es una “resurrección” solamente en el hecho de que hay muchas y bandas que probablemente lo han dejado por las mismas circunstancias que las que hemos tenido nosotros el año pasado. Nos llevó mucho tiempo superar el cambio de formación, el paso de dos a un guitarrista, pero ahora nos sentimos como si fuéramos más fuertes y mejores que antes, así que por eso es por lo que lo consideramos como una “resurrección”
¿Hubo algún momento en el que tocarais fondo?
No hubo un momento concreto. Sin embargo, el cambio de miembros fue un proceso muy extraño e inesperado para nosotros. Tuvimos que tomar rápidamente la decisión que marcaría el resto de nuestra carrera, así que fue difícil, no nos gustaría tener que pasar de nuevo por ello.
En todo esto, también decidís auto-produciros en disco, algo que para muchos artistas es un gran reto. ¿Que fue para vosotros?
Auto-producir un disco era algo en lo que estábamos muy seguros y cómodos desde el principio, ya en el proceso de composición. Tenemos experiencia en componer y grabar discos, así que teníamos una visión clara de como queríamos que sonara el disco y también lo que queríamos que llevara. Así que bueno, gracias a la auto-producción fuimos capaces de hacer esa visión y trabajar con un gran ingeniero y amigo, Paul Miner, para estar más seguros de como lo íbamos a conceptualizar en la grabación.
Vais a tocar en España en una semana. ¿Cuales son vuestras expectativas de los conciertos? ¿Recuerdas algo de la anterior visita?
¡Recuerdo los conciertos en España como uno de los mejores de nuestra carrera! Nos divertimos muchísimo en 2009 y siempre habíamos querido volver. Estamos muy emocionados y tenemos muchas ganas de que lleguen y veros a todos cantando cada canción. Va a ser increíble.
Volvamos a lo de antes ¿Cual es el mayor desafío que habéis sentido como cuarteto?
El verdadero reto es asegurar que las canciones antiguas seguirían sonando como siempre a una sola guitarra. La primera vez que ensayamos después del cambio estábamos un poco inseguros pero cuando seguimos ensayando nos dimos inmediatamente cuenta de que sonaban tan bien o mejor que antes. Supimos que era el momento de seguir como cuarteto.
“Ready and Willing” es uno de los singles, con un vídeo muy curioso. ¿Que tiene esa canción para hacerla destacar por encima de las demás?
“Ready and Willing” es una gran canción por muchas razones, tanto musical como liricamente. Musicalmente, creo que tiene el espíritu de siempre de New Found Glory, en todos los sentidos, enérgica, pegadiza, y con un ritmo de conducción. Liricamente creo que es igualmente una gran canción porque va en paralelo a nuestra carrera, habla de un sueño por hacer algo, y el momento en el que tienes que tomar una decisión sobre si es lo que realmente quieres hacer y el esfuerzo que hay que dedicarle para que eso ocurra.
En ese sentido, sé que Steve Klein escribía las canciones de la banda. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso lírico sin él?
En realidad, no fue tan diferente. Chad ha estado ayudando a escribir las letras para casi todos los discos anteriores. Esta vez las hizo él, un gran trabajo lírico que se relaciona con muchas de las cosas que todos estuvimos experimentando en el proceso de composición y grabación.
Pese a todos los cambios, el mismo Chad mencionó que ha sido el álbum que más fácil os ha resultado grabar ¿Porque?
Creo que ha sido el más fácil porque hemos sido capaces de utilizar los momentos difíciles que atravesamos como inspiración para crear el mejor disco posible. Nos juntamos para hacer la música que nos gusta, no había ningún bloqueo u obstáculos en el camino. Componer y grabar fue muy relajado.
Os hacéis mayores pero vuestro publico tiene siempre la misma edad ¿Cómo afecta esto a las nuevas canciones?
No creo que realmente afecte porque nosotros siempre componemos con el corazón, no importa donde estemos en nuestras vidas, y la gente puede verse reflejada en ello. Creo que tenemos fans más jóvenes y nuevos en cada concierto pero también tenemos la suerte de contar con los que se quedan a lo largo de los años.
¿Qué le dirías a todos aquellos que dicen que el pop punk es solo para adolescentes?
El pop punk es para cualquier persona… La escena no tiene una edad, es más que un sentimiento, un forma de unir y pertenecer a algo en lo que crees. No somos políticos ni nada de eso, contamos las cosas que nos pasan, relaciones, asuntos personales, familiares, el pop punk sirve como una forma de escapar del mundo real y pasar un buen rato, una manera de disfrutar de uno mismo y de tu vida, y una manera de pertenecer a un grupo, incluso cuando crees que nadie más piensa como tú.
¿Que pasa contigo, sigues disfrutando de la misma forma que hace, por ejemplo, diez años?
Siempre he disfrutado, no sólo con este género de música, sino también con estar en esta banda. Cada noche que salgo al escenario, vivo el mejor momento de mi vida. Soy muy afortunado de haber podido realizar un sueño y convertirlo en una carrera, no quiero darlo por sentado. Todos sabemos lo importante que es no sólo para nosotros, sino para todos los que nos siguen que sigamos haciendo música durante todo el tiempo que podamos, y espero que pueda disfrutar de esto durante muchos años!
Ahora que sólo hay un guitarrista, ¿Es un reto pasar las partes de las canciones antiguas? ¿Cómo ha cambiado el directo de la banda?
En realidad nuestro directo no ha cambiado, ya que la primera vez que ensayamos con un guitarrista nos dimos cuenta de que nuestro sonido no sólo era muy similar, sino mejor que antes. Nuestras nuevas canciones las compusimos a una guitarra, y con respecto a las antiguas, no hay nadie que haya dicho que suene peor sin dos guitarras.
Habéis estado juntos muchos años, no creo que fuese la mejor idea meter a alguien nuevo en este punto, ¿No es así?
No me puedo imaginar a nosotros con otra nueva persona. Ha pasado mucho tiempo y simplemente no tendría el mismo vínculo. Lo consideramos, pero sabemos que los cuatro estamos bien como estamos ahora, y podemos seguir haciendo música sin tener que preocuparnos por añadir otro miembro, así que vamos a continuar como tal, y de nuevo, espero seguir muchos años.
Congrats for the new album, It sounds very cool, especially considering the crazy year you’ve had. Let’s talk about it. New Found Glory never really went away, so why the name of “Resurrection”? It’s New Found Glory’s first record as a four-piece. You guys are a different band, but not really.
It is a “resurrection” just in the fact that a lot of people and bands would have probably given up had they faced the same circumstances we did over the past year. It took a lot for us to overcome a member change and going from 2 guitarists down to 1, yet we feel as if we are actually stronger and better now then before, and so we consider this a “resurrection” for the band.
Was there a time when the band hit the bottom?
There was no real bottom point, however, going through the member change was a very weird time for us. It was unexpected for us and we had to quickly make a decision that would affect us for the rest of our career, so it was a very difficult time and one that we wouldn’t want to have to experience again.
You self-produced the record, which can be a challenge for artists. What was that like for you?
Self-producing the album was something that we were comfortable with from early on in the writing process. We’re very experienced in writing/recording albums, and we had a clear vision from the beginning of what we wanted this record to sound like and also contain. So by self-producing we were able to take our vision and work with a great engineer and friend of ours, Paul Miner, to ensure that what we were feeling and envisioning would translate to the recordings.
You guys will be playing again in Spain. What are your expectations about the shows? What did you remember from your previous shows?
I remember Spain as being some of the best shows in our career! We had such a fun time when we were in Spain last 2009, it was a few years ago, and we had always wanted to return. We’re very excited to go back there, and we are looking forward to more amazing shows with all of the audience singing along to every song!
What do you think the biggest challenge was adjusting to being a four-piece?
The only real challenge was to ensure that older songs would still sound full with only one guitar. When we first rehearsed after the member change we were a little unsure going into the rehearsals but immediately realized that we sounded just as good if not better than before, and we knew right away that it was perfectly fine for us to continue on as a four-piece.
“Ready and Willing” was the single. What make it stand out as a best to introduce the new album?
“Ready and Willing” is a great song for many reasons, both musically and lyrically. Musically, I feel as though it captures the NFG “spirit” in all ways — energetic, catchy music with a driving rhythm — and lyrically I think it’s a great song because in a lot of ways it serves as a parallel to our career, where the song talks about having a dream of doing something, yet coming to a point where you have to make the decision whether it is really what you want to do and are you willing to put forth the effort to make it happen.
I know Steve Klein wrote some of the band’s lyrics. How was the lyrical process without him on the new album?
It really wasn’t that much different. Chad had been helping to write lyrics for almost all of the past records, and this time around he really did a great job of writing lyrics that relate to a lot of the things that we all had been going through around the time of writing/recording.
Chad had mentioned that this album was easier to record than others. Why?
I think it was easier because we were able to use the rough times we went through as an inspiration to create the best record we could. We all came together to make music that we loved and there weren’t really any road blocks or major obstacles that came in the way of that, so writing and recording this time around was actually a pretty laid-back, relaxing process.
As you get older, your audience stays the same age because of the pop-punk genre. How does this affect the new songs?
I think it doesn’t really affect our songs because we’ve always written songs from the heart, no matter where we are in our lives, and people can recognize and relate to that no matter what age they are. I think we have younger, newer fans at every show yet we are fortunate to also have fans that stay with us and continue to support us throughout the years.
What would you say to those who say the pop punk is just for teenagers?
Pop punk is for anyone… The scene is not really about an age, it’s more about a feeling, a way of bonding together and standing for something you believe in. We’re not political or anything like that, but we can all relate to the things we write about, be it relationships or real life issues, and pop punk music serves as a way to escape the real world and have some fun for a bit, a way to enjoy yourself and your life, and a way to belong to a group even if you feel as though no one else thinks the way you do.
And what about you? Have you got the same feeling to have fun and nothing more? The same you had ten years ago, for example.
I’ve always enjoyed not only this genre of music, but also being in this band. Every night that Iget up on stage I have the time of my life. I’m very lucky to have been able to take a dream and make it into a career, and I don’t ever want to take that for granted. We all know how important it is for not only us but everyone out there that we continue to make music for as long as we can, and I hope that I can enjoy this career for many years to come!
Now that there’s only one guitarist, is it a challenge translating the parts in these songs? How has New Found Glory’s live performance changed?
Our live performance hasn’t really changed, as the first time we rehearsed with one guitarist we realized that our sound was very similar if not better than before. With our new music we purposely wrote it with one guitarist in mind, however even with our older songs there hasn’t been anyone who has said that it sounds worse without two guitars going at the same time.
Because you four have been together for so long, you think it wouldn’t be the best to throw in somebody new at this point?
I can’t imagine us adding a new member at this point. It’s been too long and we just wouldn’t have the same bond with anyone else out there. We considered it, but we know that the four of us are fine as we are now, and we can continue to make music without having to worry about adding another member, so we will carry on as such and again hope to continue for many years to come!
