Hace ya unos meses que estuvimos viendo a Of Mice & Men en Alemania. Tuvimos la suerte de poder hablar con Phil (guitarra) y Aaron (bajo y voz) sobre el último álbum de la banda “Restoring Force”, su composición, aceptación, y muchas cosas más.
Antes que nada, ¿cómo va la gira?
Phil: Muy bien
Aaron: Genial, hasta el momento todos los conciertos han tenido todas las entradas vendidas.
“Restoring Force” fue publicado hace un tiempo, ¿como ha sido la respuesta de los fans?
Phil: Genial. Los chicos cantan las nuevas canciones más fuerte que las antiguas así que la respuesta es muy buena. Especialmente tocando en zonas donde no hemos tocado en mucho tiempo, como aquí… Los “niños” parece que disfrutan las nuevas canciones, especialmente en directo.
Aaron: Es un sentimiento muy bueno porque hemos trabajado mucho en estas canciones así que verles conectar con las canciones, como dice Aaron especialmente en zonas donde venimos menos, no hay palabras para describirlo.
Aaron, en este disco has tenido que “dar un paso adelante” y echarle una mano a Austin con las voces, ¿fue difícil el proceso de escribir y grabar el disco?
Aaron: Trabajar con Austin es genial, porque escribimos de la misma manera así que siempre es fácil compartir ideas con alguien que es muy parecido a ti. Lo que es el trabajo como tal si fue difícil, porque escribimos y rescribimos y rescribimos hasta que llegamos a algo con lo que estamos contentos.
Y como ha sido la experiencia de cantar en directo?
Aaron: Muy buena, me encanta tocar las nuevas canciones.
Algunos medios han hablado negativamente sobre el hecho de que habéis publicado un álbum muy melódico, pero después de estar escuchando el disco durante un tiempo creo que es exactamente lo que queríais conseguir, el equilibrio entre melodía y sonidos más fuertes…
Aaron: Creo que sí. Digo esto mucho, y creo que Phil está de acuerdo conmigo, estas canciones salieron muy naturalmente, esta es la forma en la que sonamos cuando los cinco nos juntamos para tocar música y hemos podido trasladarlo al disco. Y esta es la forma en la que creamos el disco: coger las ideas y la creación artística de cada uno.
Creéis que la mezcla entre melodías y hardcore es lo que define Of Mice & Men?
Aaron: Sí que pienso que somos una banda muy melódica, y a veces mucho mas fuerte, pero no creo que sólo sea eso lo que nos defina, porque siempre podemos salir de esa etiqueta y hacer canciones diferentes, como “Another You” que estamos tocando en esta gira, no es una canción muy enérgica pero si que está muy cargada emocionalmente. Así que no creo que nos definamos solo por eso, pero si que son elementos importantes de nuestra música.
¿Qué creéis que hace que “Restoring Force” sea diferente de los discos del género publicados últimamente?
Aaron: Esta es difícil. Puedo decir que vivimos en una era en la que se manipula mucho digitalmente y nosotros no hacemos eso. Tocamos las canciones cientos de veces, por eso nos llevó cuatro meses grabar el disco y no tres semanas. Así que creo que el sonido es muy real en nuestro disco y nos llevó mucho tiempo hacer que sea así.
El mensaje detrás es bastante claro para mi: el grupo ha renacido. Pero ¿qué fue lo que os inspiró a la hora de escribirlo?
Aaron: Creo que todo. Todo lo que estaba pasando por nuestra vida, dejamos de preocuparnos, nos sentamos todos juntos y pensamos en los últimos años, nuestra carrera en la música y donde estábamos y qué es lo que este disco significa para nosotros, fue una experiencia genial.
Esta es una pregunta un poco peliaguda. ¿Os habéis encontrado con que os llaman “vendidos” por hacer este álbum?
Aaron: Sabes, es muy gracioso para mi. Todos sabíamos que si grabáramos un disco como “The Flood”, venderíamos el mismo numero de discos y ganaríamos el mismo dinero, y probablemente venderíamos el mismo número de camisetas y haríamos la misma cantidad de conciertos. Y para mi eso sería “venderse”. Pero en cambio hicimos lo que queríamos hacer, y pusimos nuestro corazón en este disco y sí que pensamos en los fans que llevan años siguiéndonos. Así que siempre es gracioso para mi que la gente diga que nos hemos vendido, porque creo que hicimos justo lo contrario.
Phil: Habríamos hecho “The Flood” parte dos, pero no hicimos eso, hicimos lo que queríamos. Como ha dicho Aaron, siempre pensamos en nuestros fans pero hicimos las canciones con las que nos sentíamos identificados y cómodos musicalmente, no queríamos hacer otro disco “heavy” con riffs fuertes tras otros riffs. Hay canciones así en el disco, pero también hay otras canciones para otros grupos de personas.
Tenéis una base de fans muy pasional, ¿qué creéis que hace que la relación con vuestros fans sea diferente de cualquier otra?
Aaron: Intentamos interactuar con ellos todo lo que podemos, por redes sociales y cosas así. Solo somos un grupo de personas que hacen canciones que significan algo para nosotros y es genial ver que también pueden significar algo para mas gente. Y creo que nuestros fans conectan con nosotros en otro nivel, porque nosotros ponemos nuestra alma en nuestra música en vez de escondernos detrás de un personaje.
¿Cuál ha sido la experiencia más loca con los fans?
Aaron: Algunas veces hacemos firmas de discos y cosas así, una de las ultimas que hicimos, llegamos allí y dijimos “uau, mira a toda la fila de gente, va a ser genial” y el chico que estaba trabajando allí nos dice “no, esa no es la fila, la fila ya está dentro de la tienda, esto es toda la gente que se ha quedado fuera”. Así que a veces es bastante loco y héctico cuando hay mucha gente (risas).
Phil: Ves gente corriendo por las calles, pequeñas chicas con peinados locos (risas)
Aaron: nuestras adorables fans corriendo por las calles.
Preguntas de los fans:
¿Que queríais ser cuando erais mas pequeños?
Aaron: Yo siempre quise ser músico, honestamente. Tengo fotos de cuando tenia dos años, con una guitarra de plástico y un micrófono, te lo juro. Mi madre me contó hace poco que la primera vez que me preguntaron que quería ser de mayor, dije que quería ser el batería de Madonna. Fue la primera cosa que quería ser.
Phil: Yo quería ser atleta. De los atletas profesionales, muy buen pagados, de baloncesto o fútbol.
Aaron: no de… dardos, o algo así.
Phil: No, no (risas). Quería ser una estrella. Como una versión de Kobe Bryant.
¿Como os afectan las giras internacionales en vuestra vida personal y como grupo?
Aaron: Nos encanta hacer giras fuera, porque nos encanta viajar y experimentar diferentes cosas. Phil y yo especialmente nos encanta ir a diferentes sitios a descubrir comidas y cosas así.
Phil: nos encanta empaparnos de la cultura, vivimos en California que es muy diversa culturalmente, pero cuando podemos ir a sitios y experimentarlo, es genial.
¿Cómo se sintieron vuestras familias cuando decidisteis empezar tocar en un grupo?
Aaron: Siempre nos apoyaron mucho.
Phil: Sí, siempre. Mi hermana solía decirme que era muy malo, todo el tiempo. Y ahora es muy gracioso hablar con ella y preguntarle si sigo siendo malo y ella, por seguir la broma, sigue diciéndolo. Pero si, siempre nos han apoyado. Todavía lo hacen.
¿Como os afecta que algunos fans digan que vuestra música han salvado sus vidas?
Aaron: Es un sentimiento muy extraño, porque nosotros no intentamos conseguir eso. Pero al mismo tiempo sé que hay momentos en mi vida en los que he estado triste o enfadado o desesperado y he escuchado grupos de música que me harían sentir mejor. Esos grupos siempre han sido muy importantes para mi y pensar que nosotros podemos ser ese grupo para alguien es muy extraño. Esa conexión con los fans, como decía antes, en nuestros conciertos es totalmente indescriptible.

First of all, how’s the tour going so far?
Phil: Good
Aaron: Awesome, so far everyday it’s been sold out so thats great
“Restoring Force” was publishes a while ago, how has been the response of the fans?
Phil: Awesome. The kids are singing these songs louder than the old songs so the response is awesome. Especially playing these markets when we haven’t been for a long time… The kids seem to really enjoy the songs, especially live so it’s really good.
Aaron: It’s a good feeling for us too because we worked really hard on that so to see them connect with the songs, like he said in markets that we don’t play very often, there’s no real words for that.
Phil: Awesome. Great.
Aaron, with this album you had to step up and help Austin with the vocals, was the writing and recording process difficult?
Aaron: You know, working with him was awesome, ‘cause we write the same way so it’s kind like we bounce ideas to someone who is very liked minded. The actual work was difficult, so we spent a lot of time writing and rewriting and eventually we got to something that we were happy with, but it took a while.
And how has been your experience singing live so far?
Aaron: It’s been awesome, I love playing the new stuff live.
Some media are pointing out badly that you have released a very melodic album, but after listening to the album for a while I get the feeling that it was exactly what you wanted to do, to find the balance between melodies and hard music?
Aaron: I think so. You know I say this a lot, and Phil can back me up with it, these songs came naturally, this is the way that, when the five of us get together makes music, it sounds like this album. And that’s the way we took it, it’s everyone’s ideas, collective artistic input.
Do you think that the mix of melodies and hardcore defines Of Mice & Men?
Aaron: I do think that we are a very melodic band and also very heavy from time to time, but I don’t think that we’re defined just by that, we can always step outside that, we have some soft songs, like the one we’re playing on this tour, “Another you”, that’s not a very heavy song, but it’s very emotionally heavy. So I think we’re not necessary confined to that, but those are elements in our music.
What do you think that makes “Restoring Force” different from other albums from the genre published lately?
Aaron: That’s hard. One thing I will say is that now we live in an age that a lot of times records are manipulated a lot digitally and we didn’t really do that. we play all of this stuff a hundred of times, and it’s why it took four months to record, instead of three weeks. So there’s a lot of realness to our record, and it took a lot of time to make it that way.
The message behind “Restoring Force” is clear for me: the band has reborned. But what did inspire you while writing it?
Aaron: I think just everything. Everything that we were doing in our lives, we just stopped worrying, we sit all together and just thought about the last couple of years, our career in music and where we were at and what this record means for us, so having that experience is awesome.
This is a difficult question, I think. Have you ever founded yourself being called “sell-outs” because of the music you decide to do?
Aaron: You know, it’s funny to me. We all knew that if we went in and made a record that was just like “The Flood” that we’d sell just as many copies and make just as much of money with that, an probably sell the same amount of t-shirts and play the same shows. And to me that would’ve been selling out. But instead we made the record that we wanted to make, and we put a lot of heart into it and we had our fans in mind from the get go. So it’s always kind of fun to me that people say that we “sold-out”, because I think we did the opposite.
Phil: We would have just played “The Flood” part two, and the fact that we didn’t do that, we did what we really wanted. And like Aaron said, we keep our fans in mind but we did what we wanted musically, we didn’t conformed to do another heavy, break down, riff after riff record. There‘re songs like that on the album, but there’s also other songs that another groups of people can connect with.
You’ve got a very passionate fan base, what makes the relationship between the band and your fans special from any other?
Aaron: We try to interact with our fans as much as we can, through social network and things like that. We’re just people who write songs that mean something to us and it’s awesome that they can mean something to somebody else. And I think our fans can connect with us at another level, because we put a lot of our souls out there instead of being behind of a persona or something else.
What have been your craziest experience with your fans?
Aaron: Sometimes when we do signings, one of the last ones we did, we got there and we were like “wow, this is awesome, look at this line, it’s gonna be great”, and the guy that was working there said “that’s not the line, the line is already in the store, there’s already 150 people there”. And there was about 500 hundred people outside and he was like “that’s the line of people that couldn’t get in”. So sometimes it gets really crazy and hectic when there’s a lot of people.
Phil: People running in the streets and stuff, little girls with their crazy haircuts… (laughs)
Aaron: Our cute little fans just running through the streets.
Fan Questions:
What did you want to be when you were younger?
Aaron: I always wanted to be a musician, honestly. I have pictures from when I was two, with a little plastic guitar and a microphone, I swear. My mom told me recently that when they asked me for the first time when I was probably two, I said that I wanted to be Madonna’s drummer. That was the first things that I ever wanted to be.
Phil: I wanted to be an athlete. Like professional, really high paid athlete, of basketball or soccer.
Aaron: Not like… darts.
Phil: No, no. (laughs) I wanted to be a star. Like a “Kobe Bryant” me.
How’s overseas touring is affecting you as a band and personally?
Aaron: we love touring overseas, because we love traveling, experiencing different things. Me and Phil especially go to places and we find awesome places to eat and stuff.
Phil: We really enjoy soaking in it, we live in California, it’s very culturally diverse, but when we get to come out here and experience it, it’s awesome.
How did your families feel when you decided to join a band?
Aaron: they were always supportive.
Phil: Yes, they always were. My sister used to tell me that I sucked, all the time. And now it’s really funny talk to my sister and ask her if I still suck, and she’s like “yeah you suck”. But yeah, they was always really supportive. Still are.
How does it affects you that some fans feel like your music saved their lives?
Aaron: It’s a crazy feeling, because we don’t really intend to do that. But at the same time I know that there were definitely some times in my life where I would be sad or angry or I feel hopeless and I’d listen to music and it would make me feel better. That music was always really important to me, so to think that we could be that music to somebody else is really crazy. That connection, like I was talking about earlier, when we play live shows with our fans it’s just really valuable.
