Tras su paso por festivales como Dcode o Arenal Sound, Reptile Youth regresan a Madrid (Jueves 3 de Abril en Joy Eslava) para presentar su nuevo álbum “Rivers That Run For A Sea That Is Gone”.
Antes de nada, ¿podrías presentarte y decirnos tu papel en el grupo?
Mi nombre es Mads y soy cantante y compositor de Reptile Youth
“Rivers That Run For A Sea That Is Gone” fue publicado hace unas semanas. ¿Estabas nervioso? ¿La respuesta de los seguidores del grupo ha sido la que tu esperabas?
Siempre es un poco raro publicar discos. Esas canciones significan mucho para mi. Tiendo a sentirme un poco vulnerable sabiendo que las puede escuchar todo el mundo. Suele ser un poco abrumador.
¿Qué ha cambiado en “RTRFASTIG” respecto a vuestro primer álbum?
Tiene un núcleo más oscuro que el primero. Pero aún así hay mucho optimismo escondido entre la oscuridad de muchas canciones. El nuevo disco también es más crudo. Tuvimos la idea de grabar música electrónica actual en cinta antigua. Queríamos que fuera música electrónica tocada en directo. Porque la música electrónica actual es muy nítida y cortante y eso a veces le quita la “sangre” a las canciones.
¿Cómo describirías la música de Reptile Youth a alguien que nunca os ha escuchado?
Escucha por ti mismo.
¿Y vuestros directos? En tres palabras.
Corazón, Sangre, Latido.
Me da la sensación de que encuentras inspiración en un sinfín de cosas. ¿Alguna vez has acabado pensando “no me creo que este escribiendo sobre esto”?
Si, muchas veces. Cuando piensas en música las 24 horas del día e intentas encontrar música en todo lo que te rodea acabas escribiendo canciones que tuvieron su origen en cosas muy raras. Hace poco escribí una canción sobre las luces del tráfico. No creo que sea publicada en ningún disco pero ¿quien sabe?
Vuestros conciertos son llenos de energía y bastante locos. ¿Cuál ha sido la cosa más rara que os ha pasado en un directo?
Tuvimos un concierto muy extraño en Holanda el verano pasado, en el que atravesé el escenario! Di un salto muy alto y el escenario simplemente desapareció bajo mis pies. Tuve suerte de no haberme roto las dos piernas. El escenario estaba al lado de un gran lago, así que al final del concierto salí corriendo entre la gente, salté la valla y acabé tirándome al lago. Fue una bonita manera de acabar el concierto.
¿Qué grupos has escuchado recientemente y que nos recomendarías?
Me encanta el nuevo disco de Kanye West. Es tan anárquico, es una especie de profesor loco. Sigue empujando los límites de la música, tratando de encontrar sonidos nuevos. También esta este chico que se llama Ben Khan. Sólo tiene 3 canciones publicadas, me encanta una que se llama “Eden”. Creo que sólo tiene 18 años y escribe, produce y mezcla la música él solo.
Visitaréis España de nuevo en breve. ¿Qué recuerdas sobre vuestra última visita?
Tuvimos unos conciertos muy agradables en España el verano pasado, especialmente en el Dcode y Arenal Sound. Me encanta el público español, tiene una actitud muy receptiva que es muy difícil encontrar en cualquier otro lado.
¿Y que esperas de vuestros próximos conciertos en Madrid y Barcelona?
Espero que estén llenos de amor.
First of all, would you introduce yourself and tell us what do you do in the band?
My name is Mads. I’m the singer and songwriter of the band.
“Rivers That Run For A Sea That Is Gone” was released a couple of weeks ago. Were you nervous? Is the response of the fans the one that you were hoping for?
It is always a little bit weird to release a record. Those songs on that record means a lot to me. And I tend to feel a little vulnerable when they are being let out in the world. It can be a little overwhelming.
What has changed in “RTRFASTIG” that we can’t find in your first album?
It has a darker core than the first album. But there are still a lot of optimism hidden beneath the darkness in a lot of the songs. The new album is also a bit more raw. We had a vision of recording modern electronic music on old school tape. We wanted it to be hand played electronic music. Because a lot of electronic music today is very sharp. And sometimes the sharpness takes away the blood.
To someone who has never listened to the band, how would you describe your sound in three words?
Listen for yourself.

It seems to me that you find inspiration in almost everything, have you ever had a moment of songwriting when you ended up thinking “I can’t believe I’m writing about this”?
Yeah. A lot of times. When you think about music 24/7 and you try to find music in everything you sometimes end up writing songs that has roots in really weird stuff. Recently I wrote a song that is about traffic lights. I don’t think it will ever go on any record. But who knows?
Your live shows are crazy and full of energy, what was the weirdest situation you’ve ever experienced while performing?
We had a really weird concert in The Netherlands last summer. Where I fell through the stage!? I made a super high jump and the stage simply just disappeared underneath me. It was lucky I didn’t break both my legs. The stage was next to a big lake. And at the end of the show I went through the audience, Jumped over the fence and ran into the lake. That was such a nice way to end a show.
Which bands have you’ve listened to lately that you’d like to recommend?
I love the new Kanye West album. It’s so anarchistic. He is a mad professor. And he keeps pushing music. Trying to do it in new ways. The there is also this young guy called Ben Khan. He only has 3 songs out. I like the one called Eden best. As far as I know he is only 18 years old. And writes, produces and mixes everything himself.
You’re visiting Spain next week, what do you remember from your last visit?
We had some extremely nice concerts in Spain last summer. Especially at Dcode and Arenal Sound. I love the Spanish audience. There is an openness that is hard to find anywhere else.
And what do you expect from your shows in Madrid and Barcelona?
I expect them to be full of love.
